Grey's renewed for a season 8

What it says on the title. ABC has already decided the renewal, along with "Private Practice", "Castle", "Modern Family", "The Middle" and "Cougar Town", which will all be getting new seasons.
"Desperate Housewives" and "Brothers & Sisters" have apparently been canceled, though.
See here:

It's not that this is all too surprising for Grey's or anything, considering how well the show still does on the ratings, but I thought you guys should know anyway. Always nice to hear some good news.
Credit and props to Gusar for posting these news on another wiki, so that's how I found out about it myself.

Actually, Desperate Housewives will quite likely be back next season. The reason ABC hasn't announced anything yet is because contracts with the leading ladies run out this year, and they're still in the middle of negotiating new contracts. But you don't negotiate new contracts for a show you plan to cancel.

Brothers & Sisters... that one could very well be gone. Some actors have already left and those that haven't are constantly asking for less air time, so that they can also work on other stuff. It's a mess. And with the not exactly stellar ratings, I can see ABC pulling the plug.

Now, to Grey's... yeah, we got a new season. No surprise, being the highest rated ABC drama. But... I've heard from a friend Ellen wants to quit after next season to devote her time to her family. Don't know where she read that, but of all the rumors, this one is extremely plausible.

You've got the most interesting and mysterious of friends telling you these things... LOL

But yeah, surely Ellen Pompeo has Grey's to thank for making most of her career and whatever big star she is today, but I reckon it can be considered a little too intensive to be stuck in just one show like this for over six or seven years of your life... And indeed more time for her family is comprehensibly needed now... It will be a shame for us all, but I understand if she quits...
There will be no show without her, really, right?... It's not like they could recast the role, could they?... Another actress as Meredith?...

"Another actress as Meredith?..."
Are you nuts?
No, the only possibilities are Lexie becomes the Grey in the title of the show (though I can't see that working), or they try to continue without Meredith. Which I'm not sure how it'd work either. Nah, most likely they'd wrap up the show and be done with it.

And yeah, it's totally understandable if she were to quit, to dedicate her time to her child. Not just understandable, but worthy of admiration even. Holly Marie Combs did it. I had to wait almost five years to see her on screen again. But unlike several crazies at the IMDB forums with their self-entitlement, as if Holly owes them something, I respected Holly's decision. No doubt there will be the same kind of crazies with Ellen.

Heh, I was just joking around about recasting Meredith's character. Not that it hasn't been known to happen before on other shows, but of course I agree it would be a jumping the shark moment with such a central character on a huge show like this, of course.
They did recast Naomi's character on "Private Practice" at some point, didn't they? Wasn't the character played by two different actresses already?

Good thoughts about Lexie becoming the new title character Grey. I guess I hadn't thought of that possibility before... One can even wonder if Shonda couldn't have this in mind already when she first created Lexie's character... The succession is guaranteed.
If Pompeo leaves, though, I hope they don't kill Meredith off or come up with something tragic or too dramatic like that... Writing her off the show doesn't sound easy at all...

I, for one, would not be able to view the show in the same light if Ellen Pompeo leaves. Meredith is the heart and soul of the show. Having lost many main characters in such a drastic fashion (Burke, Izzie, George), I can't see Meredith leaving with some sort of tragic situation.

On the other hand, they could write it like Meredith and Derek are moving away together and then they would BOTH be written off of the show....I'm pretty sure most of us would really not appreciate it if McDreamy left!

As much as I may have come to like Lexie (I didn't at first), I don't think the writers should pass the title to her character.....i just don't see it.

Not only Meredith! They already took away George, Izzie and even Burke.... If they took away another important person such as Meredith or Bailey or Derek, I would be very upset :( There are some people that are important for the show. MerDer are the whole foundation of it, Bailey is the moral 'Chief' - nobody says no to Bailey - and other people like the Chief.... I don't think grey's would ever be the same without them.....
