Meredith returns to Seattle Grace but cannot get on any surgeries because of all the competition around. Izzie's back and brings in her high school teacher, who she looks up to. He voted her most likely to be a doctor. He now has dementia and still thinks she is. Izzie thinks he has been misdiagnosed.

After some tests, it is discovered that he needs a pricey surgery to save him, but he cannot afford it. Izzie makes a point to the Chief that she donated $8 million to the hospital and that he should do the surgery. He agrees. Izzie and Meredith go and watch the surgery. Meredith tells Alex that Izzie Is in there. He goes to talk to her, and gets completely shot down by Izzie. She blames him for getting fired and that she can't forgive him. Alex says he can't forgive her for walking out on him.

Cristina is unimpressed with the new head of cardio. Cristina is impressed when she diagnoses a rare cardio disorder simply by listening with her ears. She lets Cristina help. Cristina is elated. The chief's wife, Adele, is wandering the hospital looking for the Chief since he did not come home the night before. Bailey finds him asleep in an on-call room. He had stayed up all night working on the budget. Adele suspects that Bailey is having an affair with her husband.

Lexie works with the Chief on a surgery. When a complication arises, it seems that the Chief may have made an error. Bailey fixes his mistake and covers it up so no one knows about it. After this, the Chief feels as though he is done. He wants Bailey to take over for his surgeries.
