She manages to call the nurses' station to call a code blue, with Seth Green's help. Good thing Seth Green is conscious. He's very conscious. He doesn't go into shock or anything, and in fact, seems very chatty. He even makes jokes about his veins being flaccid when the nurse puts in an IV to replace some of the blood that he's losing. Cristina responds to the code blue and comes in to find Lexie wearing half of Seth Green's blood.

After Lexie has applied pressure to Seth Green's artery for a while, it seems that the bleeding has stopped. He's starting to feel queasy, but he's still talking up a storm. He even tells Lexie that he's officially in love with her and has completely forgotten about his girlfriend. Sloan needs to close it up as soon as possible, but there's no OR available.

One of the other ORs is being used by Derek, who's in quite a bind because his computer died while he inserted his probe (there's really no way to make this not sound dirty) into Mary's brain. The closest computer technicians who can service the computer are in Spokane, which is five hours away, and they can't keep the probe in her brain because it'll cause swelling. Rose offers to try to fix it because she's had three semesters of computer science at Santa Cruz. Uh. Doesn't sound like a great idea, but Derek has no other choice to go with it. And so have I. Rose gets busy re-soldering the wires in the computer or something, but she has trouble because her hands shake when she's nervous. Derek offers to do it, since he's a neurosurgeon and has steady hands, so he gives Mary's brain probes to Cristina's Intern 2 to hold, warning him that the slightest movement will kill her. Eventually, Rose fixes the computer, by hitting the reset button of all things, and they continue with the surgery.

Meanwhile, outside, Meredith has crawled into the front seat of the ambulance with an ultrasound to determine the extent of Ray's injuries. Richard looks at the ultrasound screen and announces that his pericardium is full of blood. I'm guessing it's not a good thing to have blood in one's pericardium.

Hahn, who was operating on her heart patient, is called out to the ambulance, but not before chewing Izzie out for thinking like a social worker instead of a surgeon. Izzie had wanted to update the family of the heart patient before they were done. Out in the ambulance, Hahn warns Meredith to be careful because there are about seventeen ways poor Ray can die. Meredith gathers up some spunk and tells her to shut up. Go Mere! Hahn realizes that she has to reassure the patient, but makes preparations for when the dude's heart explodes. Meredith has to stick a giant needle into Ray.This is one of the grossest episodes of Grey's Anatomy ever. But it seems to work, and Ray starts to feel better. Afterwards, Richard commends Meredith for being calm and getting the job done, even though she was scared.

Bailey, already late for her lunch with Tucker, is done operating on the white supremacist, but something goes wrong, and she has to keep going. So she sends George to explain to Tucker that he'll just have to wait until her surgery is over. Tucker is impatient and tells George to relay the message back to Bailey that the only reason he is agreeing to wait is so that he can tell her that he wants out of their marriage, since she never has time for him. Bailey has an awesome scene in which she acts the hell out from under her surgical mask and orders George to go and tell Tucker that she made vows to save lives, and he better stand by his vow of for better or for worse. George asks if he can just do some charts instead, which is kind of hilarious.

Sloan, Callie and Alex are left to operate on Hahn's patient while she's gone outside to Ray. Sloan notices that Ava is in the viewing gallery and busts Alex for sneaking her in there. Then, Sloan has to leave to check on Seth Green. But then, some majorly bad stuff happens, requiring Hahn and Sloan to drop what their doing and come back.

There's a lot of jumping around from patient to patient in this episode. It makes recapping very difficult. This time, Seth Green starts having a stroke. The fresh gauze that Lexie is holding on his neck soaks up with new blood. This is not good. They quickly roll him to the OR so that Sloan can fix him, but there's still no other OR available. So Sloan tells them to hurry Seth Green to a sterile procedure room.

Stan's wife doesn't want to stay to see if Ray is going to make it and asks Meredith to say sorry to him for her. Meredith tells her that Ray is sorry he couldn't save Stan, in case he doesn't make it. Meredith advises her to stick around for Ray because it's better to be there for someone even if it hurts than to be alone. So they both go to see Ray's room together. Richard thinks he'll be just fine, despite all the damage to his heart and lungs. Ray wakes up to see that the wife is there for him.

Bailey is finally done saving the white supremacist's life, and stitches up his abdomen so that his swastika tattoo is mismatched. He's not happy to see that when he wakes up. He tries to convince George that he just has a different belief system and that he's not that different than other people. George unprofessionally but understandably that the world would be a better place without his bigoted ass. Bailey procrastinates going home because she doesn't want to confront Tucker tonight. Cristina finally admits that she's pissed off that Bailey pulled her off of Hahn's service and used her just because of the color of her skin, and she resents it.

In the scrub room, Derek thanks Rose for fixing the computer so that he could save Mary's life. He looks at her in his McDreamy way, and then kisses her right then and there. Later on, Meredith finds him and tells him that she doesn't want him to date anyone else. She's scared to death to want him, but by being scared, it means she has something to lose, just like Richard told Ray when Meredith was about to jab him with the huge needle. Derek is about to tell her that he kissed Rose, but she cuts him and says that they'll talk tomorrow.

Alex and Ava are making out, but then Alex gets mad and tells her that he was suspended for a week because of her, and that he's screwing Lexie, and Ava is just playing dress up and is only back in Seattle for one reason. Then, he kisses her again.

Hahn asks Sloan and Callie if they want to get a drink. Callie translates to Sloan that Hahn needs a friend, and translates to Hahn that Sloan is incapable of not hitting on her. They all go to get drunk.

Lexie is devastated because Seth Green didn't make it through the surgery. Cristina gently commends her for being brave and doing a good job today, but Lexie is sad because the hospital wasn't prepared to treat Seth Green. She's also alone. So Cristina brings Lexie to Meredith's with lots of alcohol. Meredith asks Lexie if she's drinking. Awww, that's Meredith's favorite pastime and she's sharing it with her half-sister! This is progress.

Izzie comes to terms with the fact that she's not kick-ass like Cristina or Hahn because she cares too much about the patients and their families. Gizzie tells itself that it loves itself. They realize that they can't get married or do anything like that just yet, especially because of all the examples of failed marriages at the hospital, but they'll do it someday. They catch Meredith, Cristina and Lexie blowing off stress with a dance party. Meredith invites George and Izzie to join them and they do. Everyone dances the stress and grossness from the day away.

Best Moments:

Hookups:

Best Lines:

Songs/Artists:

 <<< Previous Episode | Next Episode >>>

04.09 Crash Into Me Part 1

[Season 4, Episode 09: Originally aired November 22, 2007]

Recap of Events:

This episode is the first of a two-part series. It begins with Cristina dancing in Meredith's bedroom. Meredith is obsessing about what she would do if she didn't have Derek to have sex with. She wants to tell Derek not to see other people, but Cristina's solution is to just dance, man. Downstairs, Izzie is resentful of Cristina and Meredith's friendship, especially since she's not getting any with George.

We see Bailey at home with her husband and son. Husband Tucker is upset that Bailey is at the hospital all the time. Bailey asks him to meet her for lunch so they can talk about it, but then rushes off to work.

Meredith and Derek have another bout of sex in the call room in which she tries to tell Derek to keep his paws off other women, but she doesn't.

Lexie is still mad at Alex, but Alex manages to charm her.

Seth Green is McSteamy's patient! He had a tumor removed from his neck, so he only has a flap of skin protecting his artery. That's pretty gross, and I fear that this isn't going to end well, but Seth is so awesome that I will try not to think about his exposed neck. Seth flirts with Lexie and tells her that his girlfriend just broke up with him because of the tumor.

Hahn gets an emergency patient who has heart problems, but just as he is being rolled into the hospital, an ambulance comes flying in, crashes his gurney and hits another ambulance, causing it to roll over. Good thing they are right in front of the hospital. Callie briefly explains why the doors of the upside-down ambulance can't be opened, but I missed why. The driver of the first ambulance, whose name is Mary, had a seizure which was the cause of the whole accident.

Mary's partner in the ambulance suffers from internal injuries from the crash, and he's also a white supremacist with a huge, black swastika tattooed to his stomach. He refuses to be treated by Bailey or by Richard, so Bailey gets Cristina to examine him.

One of the two guys in the ambulance, named Stan, is a goner—as soon as he is moved, he'll bleed out and die, so there's pretty much nothing anyone can do for him except get his wife to his side. His partner Ray talks to him to keep his spirits up. His wife finally gets there, and it is incredibly sad. Meredith watches the paramedic's wife and realizes that she's never met the woman before even though they both work at the hospital together. She gets down on death and stuff, but Richard tries to build her back up. Emergency workers pry open the ambulance to get Stan out. They don't bother to give him a painkiller or morphine or anything, though. Stan yells at them to stop because the oxygen regulator is embedded in Ray's back, which caused a tear in his heart. Sadly, Stan dies shortly thereafter. Richard and Meredith decide that they need to examine Ray with an ultrasound to determine the extent of his injury, so Meredith offers to crawl in through the window to do it. Good thing she is so tiny.

Derek asks Rose, the nurse from last episode, if they can be friends, and points out that she has licorice stuck in his teeth. Later on, he notices that she is wearing an engagement ring on a chain around her neck and asks her about it. It's a personal question, but he feels entitled to ask it anyway because he says they are friends. However, we all know that Derek can't be just friends with women because that is against the nature of his McDreaminess. But what I want to know is why did Rose keep her ring if she called off her engagement?

Chandra Wilson, as usual, shows amazing acting chops, as Bailey struggles with treating the white supremacist. He insists on having at least one white doctor in the OR while Cristina and Bailey operate on him to make sure that they don't decide to kill him while he's under, so Bailey gets George to join them. Bailey calls on Jesus just before cutting him open across his swastika with her scalpel. Unfortunately, because Bailey is elbow-deep in a Nazi's gut, she misses her lunch date with Tucker. She also no longer wants to be referred to as the Nazi either.

Derek has drilled a hole in Mary's brain, but just as he's done that, the imaging computer goes dead.

Hahn asks McSteamy for help with her heart patient, but he responds by asking her out for drinks. She gets snippy with him and puts him in his place. He agrees to co-operate with her, and lets Alex scrub in with him.

Ava shows up today. She wants to hang out with Alex and asks him to sneak her in to watch the surgery he's scrubbing in on with McSteamy and Hahn. So she puts on a pair of scrubs and sits in the gallery to watch Alex's surgery. Unfortunately, she blows her cover by remarking to Lexie how amazing surgeons are. Ava says that she's here to watch Alex operate, which upsets Lexie and makes her think that Alex might be a bigger douche-bag than she thought. Lexie goes back to Seth Green, who suggests that she go out with him to get revenge on Alex. I'm detecting notes of Scott Evil in his performance as Patient Nick tonight. He starts to laugh about his awesome plan, but his laughter causes his artery to burst. It's really gross. It gets bulgy and pops and spews blood everywhere.

Best Moments:

Hookups:

Best Lines:

Songs/Artists:

 <<< Previous Episode | Next Episode >>>

04.06 Kung-Fu Fighting

[Season 4, Episode 06: Originally aired November 01, 2007]

Recap of Events:

The Chief is feeling the need to spice things up. We're talking about guys night out. Now crashing at Derek's trailer in the wilderness and not keen on eating fish for breakfast, the Chief suggests to Derek that they have a "gentleman's evening" to take their mind off of their troubles. A little uncomfortable with that concept, Derek convinces Mark to come along for backup. This should be good.
Meredith tells Cristina that she can't sleep anymore without nightmares and panicking. Cristina tells Mer that she has severe abandonment issues, and suggests she quit having the sex with Derek. Good luck there.
The more Derek makes himself available, the more she pulls away. Mer tells us as much. But she makes another sex date in the call room with him later that day anyway. This girl just can't quit her McDreamy.
At the hospital, Izzie watches George sleep and snore in the on-call room. Izzie thinks it's absurd they aren't having sex yet. She wants to have hot, perfect sex, tonight. At least she's to the point!
Two women arrive after getting into a fight over a wedding dress. They were engaged (in more ways than one) in a contest where each has to hold onto a dress for as long as she can, and the last to let go wins $100,000 towards a wedding. Mark tells George to be a proxy, holding the dress while Callie treats one of their shoulders... so he spends most of the day holding onto a torn, bloody wedding dress. That's symbolism for you!
George and one of the brides-to-be are still holding onto the dress when she faints. George and Richard operate on her and after saving her, and in a nice moment, the Chief praises George for being tough and not buckling under the humiliation that Callie and McSteamy doled out earlier.
Another patient named, Rick, is brought in after skydiving and a parachute didn't open, causing him to fall 12,000 feet but sustaining only a ruptured appendix as he happened to land in shrubbery. You'd think that such a crazy medical case would appeal to Cristina, but she wants to switch patients and give Izzie the skydiver because Izzie - who Yang says isn't tough enough for cardio - is helping Dr. Hahn with Mr. Arnold.
A problem arises as Hahn can't get the stent into Mr. Arnold's artery, but can't open him up either because he's allergic to the anesthesia. Cristina, trying to get into Hahn's good graces, does research and finds that they can do the open-heart surgery while he's awake, giving him an epidural to numb him. Hahn agrees to the surgery - but Dr. Hahn still picks Izzie to assist.
Alex finds Lexie hiding in a closet from Cristina. Alex gets her to help work on the blonde would-be bride, who refuses to have surgery to fix her shoulder. Lexie convinces her to go through with the surgery by telling her that she's going to have a hunchback otherwise. A fairly compelling reason.
The shoulder surgery also goes well, but the first thing she asks after she wakes up is if she won. Callie bitches her out and tells her to let it go. In a moment obviously stemming from Callie's own struggles, she says that if she has to fight that hard for a wedding, it's not worth it.
Mark and Derek hang out outside the trailer, worrying about what to expect of their "guys night out." Richard arrives to explain that a gentleman's evening is simply an evening enjoyed by gentlemen, without any ladies. Of course, it's not happening because Dr. Hahn shows up to ridicule them and their old boys' club. The four spend the night playing monopoly. Awesome.
Lexie asks Alex what he's doing tonight. He bluntly tells her that the only thing she's ever going to get from him is sex, and that's not enough for a girl like her. He says he's not a nice guy, won't call her the next day, best of all, he's still not over someone else. At least he's up front.
Izzie and George are about to have sex, with candles everywhere, but she starts crying and says she's so exhausted after spending six hours doing surgery. George says his hand is killing form holding the dress all day. Surgeons' lives require sacrifices each and every day, it seems.
Meredith says that you have to give yourself permission not to be hardcore sometimes. She and Cristina snuggle in bed together and she tells Cristina that it's not about the sex, but she can't stop seeing Derek. For whatever reason she feels safe with him and she's not ready to give that up.
Then she gets out of bed to find Lexie and Alex, half-naked and fooling around in the hallway. You know that's not going to go over well

Best Moments:
When Meredith and Derek lay in bed together, and Meredith opened up to him!

Hookups:
Alex and Lexie...

Best Lines:

Songs/Artists:

 <<< Previous Episode | Next Episode >>>

04.05 Haunt You Everyday

[Season 4, Episode 05: Originally aired October 25, 2007]

Recap of Events:

Halloween is officially upon us on Grey's Anatomy. You can imagine the surprises destined to fall into the hands of the surgeons at Seattle Grace on this wacky holiday. Alex receives an unexpected visit from his former patient, while Meredith is convinced that her mother Ellis' ashes are haunting her, Cristina is snubbed by a surgeon she admires in Dr. Hahn, and Callie makes an announcement to her fellow doctors.
As the episode begins, Cristina is looking to rent out Burke’s apartment. She offers it to the Chief, who's officially been served with the divorce wishes from Adele. He accepts. Meredith for some reason decides that putting her mom’s ashes in a freezer bag and bringing them to work is a good idea. Izzie asks Callie a question and Callie tells her - and everyone else in the room - to please direct inquiries to Dr. Bailey as since Izzie is sleeping with her husband.

This episode promises not to disappoint.
Norman asks if he can go home because he's feeling under the weather. Alex doesn't care, and then learns that Ava - yes, Ava - is back.
She and Alex kiss in the on-call room. She reminds him he chickened out at the time she asked him for a reason to stay, but she's back because she wants to be with him. They have sex and fall asleep. Alex gets paged and tells Ava he'll be back so they can talk more about their situation.

He doesn't come back for a long time, though, because Norman had a stroke. When he finally comes back, Ava is gone. Alex apologizes to Norman for not answering his pages and for mocking him when he felt sick. Norman is going to switch his specialty to psychiatry, which is what he was leaning towards anyway, as surgeons are immature children. Which they are. But where's Ava? Will she return again?

Lexie Grey is wearing scrubs and a Little Bo Peep bonnet to work, in honor of Halloween, and gets criticized by the daughter of a patient who needs a heart transplant for not looking professional. The daughter is also wearing a costume - a mouse — but she doesn't cut people open for a living.

The daughter leaves, but is brought back later by paramedics when she is slammed by a brick. Really. She's still alive, but in a vegetative state. She's also an organ donor, with a heart her father could really use. Her father has the power to take her off of life support and have her organs donated... to himself, but he can't bring himself to.
George then makes a nice speech about how he's sure the daughter would have wanted him to take her heart because that's what he would have done with his own father. This convinces the man to take the transplant.

Richard invites Dr. Erica Hahn of Mercy West to perform the transplant, and Izzie and Cristina compete to be in on the surgery. Dr. Hahn picks Izzie because she calls Cristina out on her propensity to sleep with mentors.

This obviously doesn't go well with Yang, and she has it out with Izzie in the hallway. Cristina rips Izzie for sleeping with another woman's husband, and says that sleeping with Dr. Burke, who was her boyfriend and fiancé, was completely different. Izzie fires back that Cristina and Meredith are a closed circle, always excluding and judging her - and wasn't Derek married when he and Meredith first started sleeping together?

Miranda has a patient named James who claims his foot that doesn't belong to him. That's a new one. He says it feels like a corpse's, and wants her to amputate. When she suggests anti-anxiety medication, James who steals the chainsaw used for the pumpkin carving contest and tries to cut it off himself. You've gotta love Halloween.

Callie and Cristina do the amputation surgery - now necessary as the man has mangled his foot - and laugh at each other's relationship woes. Later, Cristina tells Dr. Hahn off, saying that she didn't sleep her way to the top and that it's Hahn who is being unprofessional.
That's when Richard announces that Eric Hahn is going to be joining Seattle Grace as the new head of cardiothoracic surgery. She's staying around! A flustered Cristina responds by immediately taking her apartment back from Richard. She gives it to Callie instead! Roommates!

Meredith crashes into Derek in the hallway, spilling some of her "bag of mommy"(ashes) on the floor. Derek says she is trying to deal and evolve.
A young boy, the son of a cafeteria worker, comes to ask for Mark, who is embroiled in his own problems right now as the nurses find out he's used the same lines to sleep with them all. They have unofficially formed a support group in Nurses United Against Mark Sloan. The kid, Ryan, is there to ask Mark for ears. He can hear but has no external ear structure.
Mark wants to help but won't do pro bono work. Meredith offers to use her mother and what's left of her "capital" to help convince others to help.
She succeeds and lines everything up. Mark tells her that even though her mother didn't take the time to take her trick-or-treating when she was a child, Meredith Grey still turned out alright. It's sweet.

Meredith, Cristina and ashes of Ellis are eating lunch as George and Izzie sit down to join. They confirm that they are together and in love, but they are waiting to be "together" out of respect for Callie. Cristina rolls her eyes with disgust at this, but Meredith tries to remain on even keel.

Later, Miranda is on the phone with her husband, apologizing for missing their son's first Halloween. Tucker hangs up on her. George joins her and apologizes for disappointing Bailey with his adultery, but she tells him he's not a bad person even though what he did was unkind and hurtful and wrong. She says that it takes two to reach that point.

After their surgeries, Lexie tells Meredith that she buried her mom's cat next to her because she thought Susan would have liked that. Meredith is just happy to have a friend at this moment and says thank you. Mer has a plan now. She washes the ashes down the sink in the scrub area outside of the OR. Richard joins her, and Ellis Grey is finally laid to rest in an appropriate manner for such an accomplished surgeon.

Best Moments:
When Meredith helped the earless boy getting surgery!
The end with Meredith and Richard, pulling Ellis' ashes into the sink.

Hookups:

Best Lines:
Lexie-"Did Meredith really bring her mother's ashes to work?"

Songs/Artists:

 <<< Previous Episode | Next Episode >>>

04.02 Love/Addiction

[Season 4, Episode 2: Originally aired October 4, 2007]

Recap of Events:

In the hospital, we see addiction everyday. Its shocking how many kinds of addiction exists, it would be too easy if it was just drugs and booze and cigarettes. I think the hardest part about kicking a habit is wanting to kick it, i mean we get addicted for a reason right? Often, too often, things that start out as just a normal part of your life, at some point cross the line, to obsessive, compulsive, out of control. It's the high we're chasing, the high that makes everything else fade away.

The episode starts with George pacing the living room telling Izzie how he feels "exhilarated", it then shows Meredith and Derek in Meredith's bed. She says that "this is the best break-up ever". Derek wants to sleepover but Meredith kicks him out and they agree on Sex and Mockery only, not a relationship. Back in the living room George tells Izzie that he should never have gotten married and that he is going to tell Callie that the marriage is over. In Burke's apartment, Christina is sitting looking at all the unopened wedding gifts. She starts vigorously opening and tearing off the wrapping paper and throwing the presents around.
The chief is examining the board to an exhausted Derek. He says that he is going to make more time for his wife and walks off as a delegater. Mark comes to talk to Derek and noticing how tired Derek is guesses that him and Meredith are back together, despite the fact that Derek tells him that they are "just friends". Mark says that Derek has a problem and that the first step is admitting it.
Christina is giving away her wedding gifts in exchange for good surgeries. Izzie is desperate for the "Mix-master" but Christina tells her that she has nothing that she wants. George attempts to tell Callie the truth but she is too busy.
Two ambulances come in, one with a a 35year old woman with third degree burns, the second with a 1year old and his very anxious father, all who were involved in an explosion.
Callie assigns Alex to the baby case despite the fact that Izzie clearly wants to do it. It is obvious that Callie has some serious issues with Izzie and suspects that something is going on between her and George. A 60year old man who was also involved in the accident named Mr Brooks with third degree burns makes the doctors promise to take care of the couple and their son as they are as good as his family. Another young man with possible internal bleeding, who claims that he was simply on his way to work when he visited his friends is assigned to Meredith and George.
Bailey attempts to get a resident from Callie to help down in the clinic with the new interns and is offended when Callie says she can't. Meanwhile Christina is shocked when she sees Dr Burke's mother coming into the lobby! She manages to hide from her but Mrs Burke says that she will wait in the lobby for her.
Christina sends a reluctant Meredith to get rid of Mrs Burke. Mrs Burke recognises her as the maid of honour and accuses her of either being "inappropriate" or "selfish" for her "its so over" speech at the wedding. Mrs Burke says that she will continue waiting for as long as it takes for Christina.
Alex attempts to comfort the crying baby and smells something off his skin and orders an MRI and a toxic screen test. Bailey attempts to teach the interns, which includes Lexie, the rules of the clinic but is annoyed by how little they know.
Izzie seems to be very nervous around Callie and continues to knock things over while she is in the room. Mr Brooks tells Mark not to make the same mistake that he did and to not be a bachelor all his life. When Callie says that she is very happily married Izzie goes to find George and tells him not to tell Callie the truth because she is in a bad mood already. George reluctantly agrees but they agree that until she knows they can't be together.
When Bailey sees Meredith she tries to convince her to help out in the clinic because the "idiot interns" know nothing and that she knows she doesn't have the authority anymore to tell her to do anything but that as Bailey saved Meredith's life she owes her some thanks! Meredith is horrified to discover that Lexie is in the clinic and wants to talk.
Meanwhile, Georges patient goes into Cardiac Arrest and George has to handle the code on his own, while Alex gets the lab work back and discovers that the couple were running a meth lab and that the baby was exposed. Callie tells Alex to call the police and social services but he is reluctant to leave the baby alone with his father. George accidentally lets slip that Bailey sent Meredith to work in the clinic and thats why he ran the code himself. Callie is angry at Bailey for disobeying her orders.
Meredith and Christina are freaked out by Lexie who keeps staring at them while they are trying to have a normal conversation. George talks to Burke's mother and tells her that Burke did the right thing because marriage is hard. Derek asks Meredith to have lunch with him but she reminds him about S and M only.
Meanwhile Alex confronts the baby's father and tells him that his son is in withdrawal from crystal meth. Alex tells him that he will be sent jail and the father punches Alex, knocking him out, takes the baby and runs.
The chief accuses Callie of being an irresponsible chief resident when he tells her that a resident has been attacked and a baby is missing on her watch. Izzie tells her that she thinks she is doing a good job and Callie is so surprised that she kicks her out of the OR.
Derek talks to Mrs Burke about Preston and she tells him that he and Preston are honourable men and that they know when to walk away and not take more then they deserve, which makes Derek think about his "addiction" to Meredith.
George's patient who was actually at the house to get meth and not just visiting as he had insisted eventually goes into withdrawal and dies because his heart can't take the pressure. Callie is beginning to break down because she thinks that she is a bad chief resident and confesses to Mark that she thinks that George is having an affair. Mark says that she should talk to him.
Meanwhile, down in the clinic Lexie attempts to get Meredith to talk to her by pointing out that they have the same dad. Meredith tells her that they don't because her dad left when she was five. Meredith tells Lexie that she kicked "the perfect man" out of her bed this morning because she can't let him love her because their dad chose Lexie. (or something like that).
Derek finds the baby and father in a closet where the baby has suffered a stroke! Alex tells Bailey if she wants to yell at him she can. She does and then she thanks him for letting her get some of her frustration out. Christina eventually goes to talk to Burke's mother. She wants the key to their apartment so that she can get some of Burke's things and the necklace that she gave to Christina for the wedding. Before leaving, she tells Christina that she is sorry that she lost the man she loved but she is more sorry that she lost her teacher. Christina seems a little shocked at these words but she needed to hear them. Later Christina tells her patient (the mother of the baby) that she know that it must seem like everything is falling apart but that she can get through it.
George tells Izzie that he has to tell Callie but later Callie begs him not o say anything, "not tonight" as she as already had a horrible day. Izzie tells Mr Brooks, who was devastated to discover that his "family" were drug dealers, that just because people do terrible things it doesn't mean that they are terrible people.
Derek admits to Mark that he has a problem, referring to his addiction to Meredith and sends Mark to tell Meredith, who he was supposed to meet in the lobby that he is held up with a patient. Derek looks on as Mark tells Meredith and he looks incredibly sad as he watches her turn to walk away. He calls after her and runs to meet her and they walk off together. Christina returns to find her apartment empty (she told Burke's mother to take the wedding gifts).

The thing about addiction is; it never ends well, because eventually, whatever it was that was getting us high stops feeling good and starts to hurt. Still, they say you don't kick the habit until you've hit rock bottom..... but how do you know when you're there? Because no matter how much a thing is hurting us, sometimes letting it go hurts even worse.

Best Moments:
When Bailey uses a guilt trip to get Meredith to help out in the clinic by saying "If i ever did anything for you, like saving your life!" Smart move!

Hookups:
Meredith and Derek in bed at the beginning.

Best Lines:

Songs/Artists:

 <<< Previous Episode | Next Episode >>>

04.01 A Change is Gonna Come

[Season 4, Episode 1: Originally aired September 27, 2007]

Recap of Events:
From ABC.com: Having just returned from her honeymoon with Meredith, Cristina searches for Burke, but he's nowhere to be found. Meredith, Cristina, Izzie and Alex spend their first day as residents with their own groups of interns - among the interns are George, repeating his intern year after failing his exams, and Lexie Grey, Meredith's half-sister whom she has never met. Now that Derek's relationship with Meredith has reached an emotional impasse, he looks to his fellow doctors for friendship; Bailey wrestles with her place within the hospital now that her former interns report to new Chief Resident Callie; and Richard resumes his position as Chief of Surgery.

The long-awaited start to Season Four, "A Change is Gonna Come," promised not to disappoint, and it most certainly didn't. Just 17 days have passed since Cristina's wedding that wasn't. Today is the first day of being surgical residents for the fab four. Note that it's now the fab four. George, who must repeat his intern year because he failed his Step 3 exam, is now under the tutelage of Meredith.
Also, in an interesting twist, Lexie Grey, half-sister to Meredith, who memorably flirted with Derek at the bar in last season's finale, is Cristina's intern. It is also Callie's first day as chief resident, and it's pretty much the day from hell as Bailey is upset with the Chief for passing her over for that position, and extends her bitterness to Callie as well.
All hell breaks lose when a car accident sends victims into the hospital. All the residents get their interns together to meet the ambulances, and Lexie picks this hectic moment introduce herself as Mer's sister.
Derek, Meredith and Lexie later have an encounter in the hallway. Derek recognizes the younger Grey as the girl from the bar. The original Grey defiantly responds, “I'm the girl from the bar!”
Alex has a patient named Joey who seems alright, but is so hungry that he swipes cotton balls - and soon, other things - to eat. Alex and Callie are bickering so much that they don't notice this strange behavior, though.
Meredith's patient is a pregnant woman whose right arm was severed below the shoulder, cleanly from the crash. Cristina goes to call the time of death on another victim when he comes back to life. His head is cut off from his spinal cord and is only being held together by skin and muscle. Derek rushes to his aid.
George is having a hard time coming to grips with having to repeat his year as an intern, and there's clearly a lot else on his mind, as well. Callie tells him she might be pregnant and he's disinterested. There's also the matter of his avoiding Izzie, who has confessed her love to him.
Speaking of Izzie, she wasn't getting much love from her interns, who think she's crazy and a loser, at the start, and their impressions of her don't change when she decides to go all out to save a deer that had been hit in the accident. Really. A sad little boy talks her into it, begging Izzie to try to bring the (cute) animal back to life.
After researching everything she can online, Izzie tries to jump start its heart, and lo and behold - it works! She then says to her interns that take it or leave it, they're stuck with her and she is who she is. And maybe it's them who suck (in as many words).
Mark finds Derek and asks him if he wants to have a drink, since Derek is Meredith-less now. Derek defends her to Sloan, saying that she is damaged because her mother didn't want her and her father left her and her best friend was left at the altar, so of course she is wary.
After Alex's patient has eaten almost everything he can get his hands on, including clamps and scissors, Alex finally notices. He tells his interns to page Bailey. That doesn't sit well with Callie. Bailey realizes she's still in charge, no matter what her title says, a fact reinforced by the Chief telling her she belongs in the OR, not setting schedules, and that she'll thank him for this one day.
Mark is in the process of reattaching the pregnant lady's arm when she goes into labor. It happens so fast that there is no time to call an OB-GYN, so George jumps in to deliver the baby. Easily!
Derek's patient is not properly anesthetized and begins to move around on the table. Any movement at all could cause death, so the doctors scramble to increase anesthesia. Cristina tells him that he cannot move, that he told his family that he loves them so he cannot leave them. We know what Cristina is really referring to - missing Dr. Burke, who she learns from Derek is not coming back... ever.
George is outside of the nursery looking at the baby he delivered. Lexie joins him and is impressed to hear he delivered the baby on his first day as an intern. He bitterly tells her it's not is first day.
He goes into a big “What about me?” speech - despite saying he wouldn't do that - but a wise Lexie counters that she didn't want to come to Seattle, but her mom died and her father is a drunk, that Mer doesn't acknowledge her. So she tells George to stop feeling sorry for himself. He tells her she's kind of awesome.
Later, in the locker room, Lexie has spread the word that George delivered a baby on his very first day as an intern. She emphasizes that it was his VERY first day as an intern. He smiles as he tells them about it.
At the end of the day, in a rare moment of weakness for each, Alex and Cristina admit to each other they miss Ava and Burke, respectively. Dr. Bailey sees Callie sulking outside and offers her some cursory words.
Meredith and Derek go to an on-call room and decide that they have to break up. For real this time. Only they immediately share a passionate break up kiss, which leads to break up sex. Hot break up sex. So once again, we have no idea where it will lead!
Lastly, George shows up at Izzie's door and lets outs the three words she has been waiting 17 days to hear ... “I love you.”

Best Moments:
Lexie tells Meredith that she's her sister.
Derek and Meredith have "break up sex" at the end of the episode!

Hookups:
Derek and Meredith at the end of the episode.

Best Lines:
Lexie: "Are you Meredith Grey?
Meredith: "Yeah"
Lexie: "I'm Lexie."
Meredith: "Thats great, move"
Lexie: Lexie Grey, I'm your sister!"

Songs/Artists:

 <<< Previous Episode | Next Episode >>>

03.25 Didn't We Almost Have It All

[Season 3, Episode 25: Originally aired May 17, 2007]
(Season finale)
Talk about the Finale!

Recap of Events:

An episode entitled “Didn’t We Almost Have It All” leaves a foreboding feeling in the air from the start. What will become of the race for Chief, the Chief's wife, the wedding, the intern in love with his patient and unwilling to admit it, the other intern in love with her married best friend, and the growing rift between Meredith and Derek? And there's the matter of the fourth rock climber with an ax lodged in his skull. We learn that this happened not because of an accident, as the trio of previously-admitted climbers originally tell the cops, but because he was badly hurt and suffering and one of them tried to kill him to put him out of his misery. Derek realized it was intentional during brain surgery on the man, and he confronted them until they caved.

With police and lawyers arriving on the scene, the man who wielded the axe defended his motives, saying he’d do it again if he had to. Derek is left wondering if he should be put out of his own misery, relationship-wise. After meetings with Addison, Mark and Preston in which he turns each down, Richard gives Derek the news that he's being recommended for the Chief of Surgery position. But Shepherd turns it down, telling Richard that there's a better man for the job - Richard. If he really wishes he could do it all over again, Derek says, then he should. The Chief's future remains up in the air, then, as he reconciles (at least somewhat) with Adele. He remains by her side throughout her operation, and afterwards, after they learn Adele miscarried the baby, she reveals it was Richard's child all along. Adele says she thought he'd go running for the hills, but she misjudged him. After all that's happened, there's hope for these two yet.

Jeff Pope, Rebecca's husband, comes to reclaim his wife. Like Rebecca said, her husband is a nice guy - one who admits privately to Alex that he didn’t pay enough attention to her. He loves her and is ready to bring her and the baby. Alex is disappointed, but when Rebecca tells him he’s the only one who saw the real her and begs him to give her a reason to stay, he can't. It seemed as if he was letting Rebecca go because he didn’t want to make her stay, only to disappoint her. Or because he can't face the fact that he's got real feelings for someone. Later, Addison (of all people) tells Alex he sucks, and that he can't leave life-changing opportunities on the table. He races back to Seattle Grace... to find Rebecca's hospital room tragically empty.

Elsewhere, Callie wants to have a baby, and after some deliberation, George is apparently into the idea. They even tried to make one in the break room, she reveals. Oh, and she was named Chief Resident, stunning Dr. Bailey and pretty much everyone else except her newly-confident self. But it's her and George that Izzie can't bear. Right before the Burke-Cristina wedding, Izzie confesses that she’s still in love with him after saying she’d do everything to support his marriage with Callie if that's what he really wants. They shared deep eye-contact after her profession of love, but nothing more. If he shares her feelings, he's not saying. George has other problems than his turbulent love life, however. He learns he didn’t pass his intern exam, although he doesn't tell anyone. Bailey knows, of course, and after asking if she failed him, says he can either walk away from being a surgical resident altogether, or repeat his intern year. George says it's him that failed her, and walks.

As he's cleaning out his locker, the newest crop of interns arrives, taking a self-guided tour of the hospital. A beautiful girl stays behind to ask him for advice, introducing herself as Lexie Grey. Lexie Grey can only be Meredith's half-sister, and is also recognizable as the girl Derek flirted with in the bar the night before. Amazing. Earlier, Derek admits to Meredith that he flirted with the girl in the bar and it was the highlight of his week. Later, though, he tells Meredith that he loves her and will never leave her, but she keeps leaving him. She comes and goes whenever it’s convenient. He tells her that if she’s not in it for the long haul, she needs to leave him for good. Meredith gets teary, remains non-committal and says she needs to go to help Cristina.

Just before the wedding, best man Derek tells Preston he doesn’t think he and Meredith are going to make it. He also lies and says he got turned down for the Chief of Surgery job, which we don't know to be a lie at the time. Cristina and Preston are about to get married. The moment has arrived. But after Cristina freaks out because her vows - written on her hand - washed off when she scrubbed in earlier that day, Burke goes out to find her and in a moment of clarity, decides he knows she didn’t want to marry him. He says she would, because she loves him, but doesn't want to. She tried to argue with him, but both knew what he was saying was true. In the closing moments, she goes back to their apartment to find Burke is gone. Meredith asks how she knows for sure, and Cristina points out the absence of his trumpet, jazz collection, lucky scrub cap and a picture of his grandmother. They're all missing. Cristina tells Meredith she’s free, then bursts into tears. Anxiety consumers her and she begs to get out of the dress. Meredith literally cuts the back off it as she collapses into her arms in emotional anguish.

Best Moments:

Hookups:
Lexie(Meredith's half sister) as one of the new interns.

Best Lines:
Cristina: "He's gone. As Season 3 of Grey's Anatomy draws to a close, all these issues and more are on the table.
Addison has returned from Los Angeles, Derek is feeling unneeded by Meredith and Miranda has some unexpected competition (in the form of Callie Torres O'Malley) in her own race for the chief resident. George, we learn, was accepted for the position at Mercy West. Callie is thrilled, but no one else shares her enthusiasm when word gets around. Izzie, longing for him more every day, begs him not to go and he explains to her that he has to get away from her because he’s a married man and can't be kissing other women in elevators. Callie happens to see their heart to heart, and the body language gives her an indication of what's going on, even if she isn't fully aware of the love O'Mizzie shares. Later, Izzie tells George that the night they spent together meant nothing after all, so he doesn’t have to leave. She then finds an empty room and cries. Later that night, Cristina is still trying to figure out her vows (and downplaying the whole ordeal) when Izzie goes on a tirade about how all of them have the man they want, and how vows are so important. Meredith asks her if she’s talking about Denny and Izzie says yes, but the look on Callie’s face is knowing and that of outright suspicion. On the professional front, Callie is making quite the name for herself by assisting on three surgeries at the same time. Mark remarked that Callie was giving Miranda some competition for Chief Resident - a fact that Dr. Bailey clearly hadn't even considered. Later, Callie summed it up with a simple position: she’s qualified, so why shouldn’t she take a shot? Since learning she probably will never have children in L.A., Addison has naturally become surrounded by pregnant people. Joe and his boyfriend, Walter, bring to SGH a young pregnant woman who is considering them to be the adoptive parents of her twins. The surrogate mom is admitted with a case of bad heartburn, but collapses later that day due to something that looks a lot more severe. Adele Webber also arrives to see Addison after being in a fender bender and confesses that she too is pregnant. She's 52, won't say who the father is and wouldn’t stay the night despite Addison’s advice because there's no way she's going to let Richard know she was even there. But at the end of the day, the Chief spots Adele trying to bolt, and she runs to the bathroom. Clueless as to why she’s at Seattle Grace, Richard talks to the bathroom door for a few minutes and tells her to come out, promising that he has moved on and is dating... or at least intends to. Eventually, hearing no response, he goes in and finds her collapsed on the floor, unconscious, in a pool of blood. Stunned, Richard hollers for help. When Ava/Jane Doe is helping Alex study for his exam, she mentions that her daughter has her father’s nose. Alex does a double-take and realizes she remembers something. He's thrilled, but she brushes it off. He asks her if she remembers anything, she says no. Eventually he begins to suspect that she’s lying and calls her on it. After arguing for a bit, she admits that she does remember everything. She woke up the other day with her full memory back. She tells him she was so unhappy with her life and her perfect husband so she left him and came to Seattle. Shortly after, the accident happened and she lost her memory. Alex is upset, naturally, that she led him on and that she hasn’t gotten in touch with her family. He threatens to call the police, but doesn't. Later, she finds him and tells him her real name. It's Rebecca Pope. What will happen next with this patient that has tested Alex like never before? Despite "the slap," Meredith still plans to attend Susan’s funeral before taking the intern exam. But Thatcher shows up at Seattle Grace, still in shock and angry, screaming at Meredith again. Susan trusted her and then Meredith killed her, Thatcher says - and she was all he had. He tells her she is not welcome at the funeral and leaves. While the other interns put their personal lives on hold for a few hours to take their exams, Meredith is left reeling by her dad and stares blankly at her test, not writing a single thing. Afterwards, she goes to the lobby and just sits there. George finds the Chief to tell him what happened. Although Meredith previously lashed out at Richard for trying to act like her dad, he still cares deeply for Ellis Grey's little girl and lets her retake the test. She says again he’s not her father, but he puts his arm around her and Meredith finally cries, letting all that pain out. A trio of missing climbers are found and are brought to Seattle Grace for emergency surgery. One of their fellow climbers is still missing on Mt. Ranier, but the staff is concerned with their broken bones and frostbite. Throughout the day, though, we learn more about the missing man, the one left behind. They talk of him as though he died up there, but are clearly remorseful, and one of the them implies they shouldn't have left him. After their surgeries, the fourth climber is rushed into the hospital - having been found, alive, with a climber’s axe lodged in his skull. Dr. Bailey asks in shock, "What happened the happened on that mountain?" It wasn't what we were first led to believe, that's for sure, and it will be very interesting to see what happens when his compatriots learn of his arrival at Seattle Grace. As Preston and Callie perform surgery on one of the climbers, they discuss why anyone would go mountain climbing in the first place. Callie said she climbed all the time when she was in college, that it's hard work and you feel terrible doing it, but it’s worth it to reach the top. It shows you how strong you really are, deep down. Burke obviously relates, in terms of his relationship with Cristina. In one more day, he'll have make it to the top... but can he make the last push to the summit? Derek has been trying to be there for Meredith throughout the day, but she rejects his attempts and he’s getting sick of it. At the end of the night, he's having a few drinks with Burke, Addison and Mark at Joe’s as a small bachelor party for Preston, and questioning his relationship with Meredith once again. That's when a beautiful woman approaches him. She offers to buy him a drink and while he seems very attracted to her, he politely declines. He says he is with some friends, she says that's too bad, and he says yes, yes it is. Does this new girl spell trouble for Meredith and Derek? We will have to wait and see.

Best Moments:

Hookups:

Best Lines:

Title Reference:
The episode's title refers to a song by Barenaked Ladies.

Songs/Artists:

 <<< Previous Episode | Next Episode >>>

03.22 and 03.23 The Other side of This Life(2 hour Addison spin -off)

(Season 3, Episode 22-23: Originally aired May 3, 2007)

Recap of Events:

"She's gone." That's all Richard has to say when Mark asks about Addison's whereabouts. She's taken a leave of absence from Seattle Grace, leaving Dr. Sloan sad, and more than a little curious as to what's in Los Angeles. We're in the same boat as Addison speeds down California's Pacific Coast Highway in a classic red convertible. Just as Dr. Montgomery has hit the road to follow her dream, Cristina has woken up to find that she's living a nightmare. Both her mom and Burke’s mother have arrived to plan the huge wedding Cristina never wanted. The misery intensifies when they make her ask Callie to be a bridesmaid, as Cristina can barely even make the word "bridesmaid" escape her mouth, Meredith tells a slightly happier Derek that she’s a different person since the drowning and wants to let people in. Now is not the time to give up on her, she says, so don't. She'd been rehearsing that speech (with gestures that she dropped at the last minute). Whatever doubts he might have about breathing for our girl, he smiles McDreamily and agrees. When Addison arrives in L.A., she heads to Oceanside Wellness Center. She gets in the elevator and a hot guy gets in with her. Naturally, she laughs uncontrollably and tries to explain how elevators make people horny back where she's from. The gentleman thinks she's possibly insane, but is taken with our heroine just the same. We soon learn that Addison made the trip to see an old friend, Naomi, from med school. They catch up, and Addison is shocked to discover that Naomi - just like her - just got divorced from her hot, successful husband (Sam), but still works along side him at the wellness center! Within minutes of this revelation, Addison admits that her trip down to the Golden State is not all about rekindling old friendships. She wants to have a baby, and Naomi is a renowned fertility specialist. It's just a matter of picking out the sperm donor and we're good to go! She soon meets the rest of the gang at the

Oceanside Wellness Center, an eclectic bunch to be sure, with a good amount of in-fighting and sexual tension, but great friends (sounds vaguely familiar). In addition to her old med school friends Sam (Taye Diggs) and Naomi (Merrin Dungey), we're introduced to the likes of... Soon, a pregnant woman, Lisa, and an entourage of five show up. Lisa, it turns out, was artificially inseminated as a surrogate for another woman, Carol. The same week Lisa underwent the procedure, however, she slept with Carol's husband, her ex-husband, and another guy. In a case making Anna Nicole Smith seem normal, the paternity is unknown. Addison points a the bigger problem than all of that, though - Lisa has not received prenatal care. She steps up to examine her and determines Lisa has a potentially life-threatening condition (for both her and the baby). Lisa takes comfort in Addison's care and asks her to stay in L.A. until she delivers the child. Back in the Pacific Northwest, Meredith’s stepmother, Susan is admitted with a bad case of the hiccups, forcing Meredith to bond with Thatcher. Cristina is dragged to a dress shop and fights with Burke about having a big ceremony. Preston tells his mother that Cristina isn’t as cold as she seems, and she tells him she trusts his instincts. But does he? Addison trusts her friend Naomi, so it comes as a crushing blow for her to learn that her odds of becoming pregnant via artificial insemination are virtually nil. For Addison, this baby is about changing her life - about taking control back. When she gets the news, she falls apart, spiraling into depression, confusion, and a host of other emotions. Later, Naomi and Violet show Addison how they get over their bad moods - by waiting in the wellness center lobby until 12:55, when Dell shows up with a surfboard ready to hit the beach. So what if he's like 15... these ladies are out to enjoy a long look at those abs, and more power to 'em. As if Jane Doe/Ava hasn’t been though enough since being rescued in the ferry disaster, she’s bleeding in her brain. This could be the cause of memory loss, and Derek says he can do surgery, but there’s no certainty that it will bring back her memory. Addison and Pete begin flirting in L.A., and she makes multiple cracks at his profession, specifically his specialty in herbal remedies. He makes Addison lie down so he can prove he’s not a quack. Addison is skeptical about the acupuncture he gives her, saying there is no way it’s going to release tension and give her a rush of emotions, as he claims. Shortly thereafter, her face is a tear-filled pin-cushion, as she’s sobbing uncontrollably and saying she’s hates L.A. and life. In surgery, the doctors learn that Jane Doe can speak at three languages! But the bleeding in her brain gets worse, and she becomes unstable. At the same time in L.A., Lisa goes into labor and is rushed to the hospital. They deliver the baby safely, but something in Lisa’s uterus ruptures. Addison saves her, then gets livid with the possible parents as all they want to know is whether the paternity test results came back. Later, Lisa gives the baby to Carol and Doug, and the paternity is never revealed.
As the doctors comment on how this baby will have two moms and three dads, and how much they all look like a family, Sam touches Naomi’s arm. He was never unfaithful to her - just woke up one day and decided he couldn’t do it anymore. But now he's regretting that decision. Jane Doe’s surgery didn't recapture any of her memory. When Alex takes her for a walk outside, he tells her maybe that’s not such a bad thing, others would kill for a clean slate like she's got. She’ll just have to make new memories. “How can you be so good with me,” she asks. “What’s wrong with you that you can’t be this good with someone you have feelings for?” For the first time, Alex Karev is speechless. After everything she's been through, Addison is crying in the stairwell. Pete finds her, but she tells him he’s not allowed to flirt with her, as she is all dried up. Pete doesn’t run, but rather says, “I’m gonna kiss you. I’m gonna kiss you with tongue. I’m gonna kiss you so you feel it.” Lame as this line is, she's buying it, and they share a rather steamy kiss. When she asks Pete why heN just did it, he tells her it’s to remind her that she’s not all dried up. He departs, leaving her breathless and more than a little baffled. Tension is also rising back at Seattle Grace, as Izzie and George wind up in the elevator together. She begs him not to transfer to Mercy West, and they hug, and then they kiss, somewhat reluctantly, but wanting it like they've never wanted anything in their lives, all at the same time. When the doors open, Callie is standing there. She didn't see them in the act, but George leaves sheepishly and Dr. Torres gives Izzie an evil look. We know full well these two are going to be exposed, and in the not-too-distant future. Sparks will fly when that happens! Susan ends up dying due to complications from her surgery, which leaves Thatcher absolutely emotionally destroyed. Instead of the embrace they should have shared as Mer tells him the news, he slaps her in the face. Meredith runs off in shock. Cristina comes home and tells Preston that she bought a dress, and he asks if she’s happy. She says yes, and asks him the same thing. He tells her he is. Once again, it remains to be seen if he believes it. Meredith, Izzie, Alex finish the day off commiserating over tequila. Derek sees the trio in the window, but doesn’t go in. As for Addison, she heads home with an invite from Naomi to come back and fill that empty office they've got at Oceanside. Addison might be headed back to Seattle in that convertible for now, but there's a good chance we will see a lot more of this California group in the coming months.

Best Moments:
Izzie and George in the elevator, kissing.

Hookups:
Izzie and George.

Best Lines:
Crisina: "You want a big wedding?"Burke: "Yes." Cristina:"Are you kidding me?" Burke: "No."

Women(An old friend of Addison):"Why are you really here?" Addison: "I wanna have a baby."

Title Reference:
The episode's title refers to a songs by David Bryne, Peter, Paul and Mary and Jefferson Airplane.

Songs/Artists:

 <<< Previous Episode | Next Episode >>>

03.18 Scars and Souvenirs

[Season 3, Episode 18: Originally aired March 15, 2007]

Recap of Events:
People have scars in all sorts of unexpected places, like secret road maps of their personal histories, diagrams of all their old wounds. Most of our old wounds heal, leaving nothing behind but a scar, but some of them don't. Some wounds we carry with us everywhere and even though the cuts long gone, the pain still lingers.

Chief Webber brings a new doctor - and potential chief successor - to the hospital by the name of Colin Marlow. He's a renowned surgeon (obviously, if he's going to compete for Richard's job) but there's something a little more significant about him than that. He's one of Cristina Yang's former professors. And her ex-lover. Any chance she had of concealing this evaporates when he gives her a hug (and more) as he's introduced to the rest of our group. In typical fashion, Yang tries to blow the whole thing off with Burke, but during a surgery, Marlow nonchalantly drops this piece of knowledge - he and Cristina not only dated for three years, but he proposed to her more than once, only to be rebuffed because she didn't believe in marriage.

When Preston confronts her about this, Cristina tells him pretty matter-of-factly that she doesn't really care about the whole marriage thing but that she's going through with it mostly to make him happy. It hurts him to hear this (as you might imagine). Burke worries she'll just decide to end their relationship in similar fashion. After another argument, Cristina winds up spending the night at Meredith's house. If you thought that was weird, we're just getting started. Izzie works with an elderly man who was shot during the Korean War. By a guy on his side. On purpose. The doctors must operate to remove a bullet that's been lodged in the man for nearly half a century. When they present it to him after the operation, he breaks down, decimated by its tiny size. He expected it to be bigger, more befitting of the burden he's carried all his life. He urges Izzie not to let anything so awful happen to her that her good soul is changed.

By now, the attendings are all acutely aware that this Colin Marlow guy is a front-runner for chief - and waste no time in kissing up to him... and accusing each other of kissing up to him and neglecting what's important. Richard, of course, is subjected to their bickering yet again, and thinks he's probably pretty smart for bringing in some new blood. Despite having taken up residence in Meredith's place, Alex spends most of his spare time with Jane Doe, who undergoes surgery on her eye. There are complications with the baby, but Addison handles them accordingly. At the end, Alex implies he has a hot date during a run-in with Izzie, when he's really just going to see Jane D. She's still badly hurt, but it's clear from the way he acts that Dr. Karev feels a real connection to her.

Emotions run high as Derek treats an old friend, Helen, for a brain tumor. She's losing the will to go on after so many surgeries, but McDreamy tries to convince her to have hope and be willing to try again if this time isn't successful, but she's made her decision: this surgery is her last. Despite heart complications during the surgery, Derek guides her through it, removing the tumor for good. Finally, she can live her life. Now for the most scarred Seattle Grace intern at all. First of all, she's determined to change her outlook on life after her near-death experience. But will she be able to? Susan Grey convinces her to have dinner with her and Thatcher. Meredith agrees. She and Derek have them over for dinner. It's awkward. Very awkward.

Just when we think Meredith's about to lose it, though, Izzie blows a fuse and Thatcher heads down to the basement to fix it. He did own that house at one point, after all. Thatcher collect his thoughts in the laundry room to stall, while Meredith and her stepmother manage to have an actual talk. In the basement, Derek confides in Thatcher that Meredith is a handful, but getting close to her in spite of that is worth it. Finally, George learns a secret about Callie: Let's just say that Izzie isn't the only heiress in town. That's right, Callie is from a rich family. George, of course, tells just about everybody. Izzie later makes a comment about Callie's cash and Dr. Torres is livid. Callie tells George that she thinks he has feelings for Izzie and vice versa. Rather than denying it, however, George replies that there's no way a hot blonde like that would be into him. Not good. Callie thus throws George out and he goes to Meredith's house to blow off steam. He and Izzie get drunk off Knob Creek and sit around laughing and talking about the mess their lives have become. George tells Izzie what Callie said and she laughs so hard she gets tears in her eyes. That's when things change. He has his hand on the back of her head and they stop laughing, just gazing into each other's eyes. The next thing we know, it's morning, George is in Izzie's bed and they're naked. Izzie realizes what happened the night and the look on her face is something akin to abject terror.

What's worse, new wounds which are so horribly painful or old wounds that should've healed years ago and never did. Maybe our old wounds teach us something, they remind us where we've been and what we've overcome, they teach us lessons about what to avoid in the future. That's what we like to think, but that's not the way it is, is it? Somethings you just have to learn over and over and over again.

Surprises:
Cristina dated Colin Marlow for three years!

Hookups:
George and Izzie!

Best Lines:
"Did he make you a bettah lovah!?" Izzy to Cristina, trying to get the 411 on Colin Marlow.

Title Reference:
This episode's title refers to a song by Mark David Manders.

Music: Scars and Souvenirs

 <<< Previous Episode | Next Episode >>>

03.17 Some Kind of Miracle

[Season 3, Episode 17: Originally aired Feb. 22, 2007]

Recap of Events:

There are medical miracles. At first, she denies that she stopped fighting to stay afloat in the water, but later she admits that she let herself drown when she thought for one second, "what's the point?" Denny tells her about what it is like to be a ghost, and to barely get to feel the people you loved during life. He also tells her that her friends won't be able to handle her death, and tells her that when Christina was nine, she watched her father die in a car accident.
Back at the hospital, Jane Doe has lost her memory and Izzy and Callie get in another fight. Christina freaks out and decides to go binge shopping at the 99 cent store and get drunk rather than stay and watch Meredith die. Burke come and finds her, and she comes back to the hospital to say goodbye to Meredith. She begs the doctors to do one more attempt at resuscitation.
Derek goes upstairs to tell Meredith's mother that it's her fault Meredith is dying.
