Character Backstory
Season 1
  • Met his future wife Meredith in a bar (Joe's) and had a one night stand. Neither knew who the other was until the next morning when they met at the hospital; he is an attending, she an intern. Initially, Meredith refused to date him.
  • Izzie threw a little get together so everyone could meet her boyfriend Hank, Meredith, under the influence of alcohol, decided that she and Derek could date.
  • She asks Derek to take her for a ride and they go to Derek's car, they get caught by Dr. Bailey who wants them to move their tail wagon.
  • They become very serious Derek staying at Meredith's for a whole week, which her roommates think is weird. Meredith wants to know where he lives.
  • Derek takes Meredith to his land and tells her parts of his life, like he has 4 sisters, 9 nieces, 5 nephews, that he likes coffee ice-cream, indigo blue and he lives in that trailer (Derek points to his trailer in the distance)
  • Derek and Meredith are really happy together. They were on their way out of the hospital to have steak dinner when a woman enters the hospital, Derek quickly turns to Meredith and tells her, he is so sorry, she looks at him then at the woman.
  • She introduces herself to Meredith, Addison Shepherd, Meredith says Shepherd and Addison proceeds to berate Meredith.


Season 2
  • He was torn between Meredith and his wife. Initially, he and Addison filed for divorce, but when it came time to sign them, Derek couldn't. He still loved his wife but he loved Meredith as well. Meredith begged him to pick her, but he chose Addison. At the end of the season, he slept with Meredith and at the end, asked her to choose between him and Finn.


Season 3
  • Derek and Addison divorced, and Derek and Meredith got back together. It went well in the beginning, however, after Meredith's mother Ellis called Meredith normal, Meredith became depressed and attempted suicide twice. On the second attempt, Derek saved Meredith from drowning, and it was a life altering experience for both of them. Their relationship became strained after this incident, and they eventually broke up after Cristina was left at the alter by Burke.


Season 4
  • Derek finally "gave up" on Meredith and decided to play the field. He ended up with Nurse Rose, but he really thought about Meredith. In the season finale, he and Meredith got back together, and he left Meredith to end things with Rose.
Season 5
  • Derek moves in with Meredith, after Meredith had asked him to.
  • Derek kills a woman in surgery, and he abandons his post at the hospital until Meredith comes with Izzie's MRI telling him that he needs to help her.
  • Derek and Mark fight
  • Derek proposes to Meredith
  • When Derek and Meredith give their wedding to Alex and Izzie on their wedding day.
  • When Derek and Meredith got married at Seattle Grace with a Post-it note.
Season 6
  • Derek and Richard begin to have disagreements about the future of the hospital.
  • He decides to operate on a "so-called" inoperable tumor belonging to a lab-tech, Isaac. He successfully removes the tumor, and he is fired by Richard because he disobeyed Richard's orders. Because he was thrilled with the result of his surgery, he tells Richard to think about it, and let him know in the morning, and he walks away.
  • Later in the season, he finds out that Richard has been drinking again, and that Richard has to admit that he is an alcoholic.
  • After a fight with Meredith which she calls Post-it, she told her husband about her friend not the head of Neuro Surgery, Derek gave Richard some time.
  • Derek later alerts the board of the hospital, and he is made interim chief until Richard recovers.
  • He rehires April Kepner and Megan Nowland, who had been fired because of the merger.
  • Eventually, Richard returns, and Derek rehires him as a Senior General Surgeon Attending.
  • As Chief he takes April Kepner on his service and he becomes her mentor
  • Out of jealously he steals a surgery off Meredith and Dr Nelson better known as Shadow Shepherd
  • While hosting a party, Derek shows house plans to Mark Sloan and Owen Hunt in his study.
  • In the season finale, he is shot in the heart by Mr. Clark, and Cristina operates on him. It is implied that the surgery was successful because he asked for Meredith at the end.
Season 7
  • Starts driving recklessly, way to fast and keeps being pulled over by the police.
  • He quits being the Chief of Surgery
  • Meredith leaves him in jail over night
  • He and Meredith get married officially at City Hall
  • Derek and Meredith start temporary custody of baby Zola
  • He starts a clinical trial into a cure for Alzheimer's disease
  • He becomes angry when he finds out Meredith has tampered with his trial
Season 8
  • Goes out to the woods to build his and Meredith's house
  • Won't talk to Meredith
  • He wants to take on cases that other doctors say are inoperable, he wants to say YES to all the no cases.
  • Lexie is now on his service now that Meredith is no longer on the Neuro service.
  • Seems lost without Meredith in his OR
