4.12 Where The Wild Things Are

[Season 4, Episode 12: Originally aired April 24, 2008]

Recap of Events:

Previously, on Grey’s Anatomy, George suggested that he and Lexie move in together. McSteamy made a play (unsuccessfully) for Hahn. Fed up with Meredith, Derek decided to give dating Rose a try. George and Izzie struggled to make their relationship work post-sneaking around.

Meredith sits anxiously in a therapy session, refusing to open up about her issues. Uh, then what’s the point of going? Meredith says that she’s fine but she just hasn’t been sleeping. When she is paged, she bails out mid-session, without apologizing. Her therapist is played brilliantly by guest star, Amy Madigan, who you know from her work on Carnivale.

Webber scolds Bailey, for keeping her residents at the hospital for nearly two weeks straight, competing in a surgical contest. Meredith, Cristina, and Izzie trash talk, and each confident that they’ll win the prize. George has no idea what they’re talking about (since he’s still an intern). Don’t worry, George. We have no idea either!

Izzie claims a patient off the ambulance with a swollen ankle who passed out on the street. The others wait for something better and get more than they bargained for when a group of people, who were injured camping, come racing to Seattle Grace. Cristina helps a man who’s literally holding his intestines in his hands. Not gonna lie. Grossed me out a little. To add to the ick factor, Meredith consoles the woman from the camping trip, who's crying because her husband was "oversharing" about their relationship. When she moves her hat, about half the skin on her head is hanging off. This show should give me a heads up before they do something like that!

Cheech Marin takes an exceptionally unfunny (and un-high) turn as the patient with the swollen ankle. Depressed and lonely, he tells Izzie that he just wants to go home or, preferably, back to when he was 30 and happy. In a moment of weakness and insanity, Rose tells Lexie that she loves Derek and Meredith is close enough to hear it. The two campers who were injured spend a few minutes with each other. The one with the intestines blames his brother for the bear attack because he touched a cub. He also criticizes him for his midlife crisis and for marrying his rebound girl. The residents separate them since they each need their own time to heal (and not air their dirty laundry).

The residents all behave in insensitive ways, as they are too focused on the competition. When Meredith checks her patient's eyes, she throws her hands in the air in victory, shouting "Tumor!" That means, she gets more points. Bear Attack Guy definitely has a brain tumor, which has affected his judgment and behavior. His brother ended up not making it and when he finds out, he can't help but laugh, even as he realizes how serious his own condition is. Bear Attack Guy suddenly gets serious, feeling he deserves to die after costing his brother his life.

The guy with the swollen ankle finds out that he only had the flu. He is understandably upset and screams at Izzie for putting him through hell. Meredith ends up winning the contest, racking up the most points for the guy with the brain tumor. She wins a sparkly pager, which has passed down from resident to resident. For the next 3 months, Meredith gets first dibs on all surgeries. Webber tells Izzie that she's a "lion" and was a great competitor in the contest. Apparently, nobody at Seattle Grace has a problem with it.

Cristina was overly jealous with Callie's close relationship with Hahn. Neither woman would let her in and be her friend. Lexie tried to give George an "out" with the apartment but he decided that he wanted to stay. Meredith ignores the first sparkly page she gets and later, pretends she doesn't notice Derek and Rose's nauseating relationship. She puts it aside to work alongside him and do her job to the best of her ability.
