| Synopsis | Hookups |
| In the concluding half of Grey's Anatomy's Season Two finale, Denny appears to have survived his heart transplant, and in the ensuing euphoria he proposes to Izzie but we're still some distance removed from a happy ending. Elsewhere, the relationship between Derek and Meredith is soured a bit by the presence of Finn, while Callie and George wonder if they can be in lust rather than love; Cristina, placed in charge of the ER, nearly suffers a meltdown over the plight of the seriously wounded Burke; and Webber arranges a "prom night" for his terminally ill niece. To keep audience interest piqued until the opening episode of Season Three, two life-changing events take place just before fadeout time. |

| Recap of Events: |
The chief launches an investigation to find out exactly what happened to Denny but all of the interns, even Alex, stand behind Izzie and refuses to tell who cut the power to his ventricular assist device. After receiving a successful heart transplant, Denny confirms to Izzie that he did propose to her after she cut his LVAD power and she accepts. Meanwhile, the hospital throws a prom for the chief's niece, who is dying of cancer and was unable to attend her own high school prom. During the prom, there is a intense scene where Meredith and Derek are unable to keep their eyes off each other. Meredith pulls away from Finn pretending that she is 'hot, and claustrophobic' and goes to get some water. Derek then tells Addison that he needs to check on a patient, but instead follows Meredith. They both enter an exam room. Meredith tells Derek to stop looking at her because she is trying to be happy with Finn but she 'can't breathe' with him looking at her like that. He says he would do anything to be looking at his wife instead, but she 'doesn't make it impossible for him to feel normal', and he wishes that it didn't make him sick to the stomach watching his vet touch her with his hands. They both look at each other unable to work out what to do. They start kissing and end up having sex. The song 'Grace' by Kate Havnevik plays and the scenes switch between the sex scene and Denny dying of a stroke. As the scene ends, Meredith is looking for her underwear, while Callie comes in and alerts them about Denny. The gang finds a heartbroken Izzie laying in Denny's bed. Alex manages to carry Izzie away, while the song Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol is played. Izzie then admits to the chief what she did and leaves the internship program. The final scene of the season shows Meredith being forced to choose between Finn and Derek. |
