Back at work, the staff deals with such patients as a competitive hot dog eatersuffering from what may be a terminal case of hiccups; a rock guitaristwho loses several fingers; a woman whose drug treatment makes her abnormally cheerful; and an elderly ladywho stubbornly refuses to leave after being discharged. And in another development, Alexgets the results of his board exams.

Recap of Events:

The truth is in short supply as Meredith and Cristina lie to each other about the status of their relationships. George is given the unpleasant task of discharging an elderly patient who's no longer sick, but refuses to leave the hospital; and Alex learns his fate after re-taking his medical exams.

Opening Statement/Quote:

As doctors, we're trained to be skeptical, because our patients lie to us all the time. The rule is, every patient is a liar until proven honest. Lying is bad. Or so we are told, constantly from birth—honesty is the best policy, the truth shall set you free, I chopped down the cherry tree, whatever. The fact is, lying is a necessity. We lie to ourselves because the truth, the truth freaking hurts.

Ending Statement/Quote:

No matter how hard we try to ignore or deny it, eventually the lies fall away, whether we like it or not. But here's the truth about the truth: It hurts. So we lie.
