Synopsis
Hookups
A power outage at Seattle Grace traps George in an elevator with a seriously wounded police officer, forcing him to perform emergency surgery. The outage also causes another patient to lose his "pain medication" to be exact, his collection of video porn forcing Cristina to do some clever improvising. Elsewhere, after trying to convince a religious zealot to authorize surgery for his daughter, Meredith has a showdown with Derek. And Meredith's delusional mother Ellis waxes nostalgic over her long-ago love affair with Seattle Grace's chief surgeon Webber.

Recap of Events:

Meredith and Dr. Shepherd have to use more than medicine when a young Hmong woman’s traditionalist, religious father forbids her to have a life-saving operation unless a shaman is called upon to "retrieve her souls". Meanwhile, George and Alex are forced to perform surgery in a trapped elevator in an attempt to save a patient’s life which George shows his potential while Alex shuns the challenge, and it is decision time for Derek and the two women in his life.
In the official writer's blog for the show,
Shonda Rhimes noted the following about this episode:"Bring the Pain" was originally conceived, written and shot to be the finale of Grey's Anatomy's first season. But then we aired after Desperate Housewives and, well…everything changed. Ratings, time slots, a really great audience following…it was mind blowing and humbling for all of us. The network made a decision — our first season needed to end in conjunction with DH's season. And so suddenly, the arrival of Derek's wife became our perfect season-ending cliffhanger. And this episode became one of a series of big episodes to launch our second season. But if you watch it with that in mind — the fact that this was the final episode — you can see me trying to bring the characters full circle from the pilot.

Opening Statement/Quote:

Pain comes in all forms. The small twinge, a bit of soreness, the random pain, the normal pains we live with everyday. Then there is the kind of pain you can't ignore. A level of pain so great that it blocks out everything else. Makes the rest of the world fade away. Until all we can think about is how much we hurt. How we manage our pain is up to us. Pain. We anesthetize, ride it out, embrace it, ignore it, and for some of us the best way to manage pain is to just push through it.

Ending Statement/Quote:

Pain, you just have to ride it out, hope it goes away on its own, hope the wound that caused it heals. There are no solutions, no easy answers. You just breathe deep and wait for it to subside. Most of the time pain can be managed, but sometimes the pain gets you when you least expect it, hits way below the belt and doesn't let up. Pain, you just have to fight through, because the truth is you can't outrun it, and life always makes more.
